I walked into a branch office in Farmingdale, NY. I spoke with one of the bankers in the back office about opening an account. I asked him specifically about regular fees in my checking account. He made it clear that this account would be free as long as I had direct disposit. Fast forward to 2005 and all of a sudden I start getting charged a monthly fee. I contact CitiBank to see what the problem is, they tell me my account requires me to pay a monthly fee even with direct deposit. I spoke with several people, one of whom even agrees to reimberst my account. However without receiving any calls, I continue to get charged the fee and they failed to reimberst me as promised. Finally someone says that I need to change my account type to not get charged monthly fees. So I probably did have the wrong account all along, but the CitiBank staff is clearly incompotent because they set it up incorrectly in the first place and they can't fix problems. In general CitiBank customer service is slow.

If you have trouble dealing with a company, your best bet may be for you to contact the Better Business Bureau. Post your company complaints on boards like this one to help educate other consumers. You may also want to report bad companies that have deceptive practices to the FTC. Obviously if you find a company is doing a good job, then the best way for you to help the company is the spread the word!

Research companies yourself before doing business with them. It can save you much time, money, and most importantly leave you with a positive customer experience.
